ก็เลยคิดค้นวิธีการใหม่ โดยให้เครื่องยนต์ ไปหมุนเครื่องกำเนิดไฟฟ้า แล้วส่งกระแสไฟฟ้าลงไปขับมอเตอร์ที่อยู่บนเพลาล้อแต่ละเพลาบนหัวรถจักรแทน หัวรถจักรดีเซลที่ใช้ระบบนี้จะเรียกว่า”รถจักรดีเซล-ไฟฟ้า”
ดูเผินๆเหมือนว่าระบบส่งกำลังของรถจักรดีเซล-ไฟฟ้าจะซับซ้อน แต่จริงๆมันซับซ้อนน้อยกว่าชุดเกียร์ขนาดใหญ่มากๆลูกนึงด้วยซ้ำ.
